Zen Master, Robert Althouse
Roshi Robert Joshin Althouse is a fully empowered Zen teacher in the White Plum lineage and a fully ordained Zen Buddhist Priest. Roshi and his wife, Rev. June Ryushin Tanoue, co-founded the Zen Life & Meditation Center. Roshi is the Abbot of the Zen Center and it's primary teacher and meditation instructor.
Althouse began teaching in Hawaii where he and his wife co-founded the Zen Center of Hawaii in 1993. He has been teaching for over 25 years and has lead countless meditation retreats, workshops, and classes.
He and his wife moved to California in 2001 to work for the Peacemaker Community with Bernie Glassman. where Althouse served as the Director of the Zen Peacemaker Order for two years. He also served on the Board of Directors of the Buddhist Peace Fellowship for three years.
Althouse has been practicing in the Zen and Vajrayana traditions for over 40 years. He's been teaching for over 20 years. His root teachers were Taizan Maezumi Roshi and Chogyam Trungpa Rinpoche. He received Transmission from Roshi Nicolee Jikyo McMahon in the White Plum lineage tradition of Zen. He has a Bachelor's in Sociology from the University of Redlands.
Zen Teacher, June Ryushin Tanoue
Sensei June Ryushin Tanoue is a teacher at the Zen Life & Meditation Center of Chicago. She has been practicing Zen for 20 years. She received Shukke Tokudo as a noviate Zen Priest from her teacher Roshi Robert Joshin Althouse on June 2, 2007. She received Transmission on October 12, 2014. She is now fully empowered as a Zen Teacher (Sensei) and a Zen Buddhist Priest. She is also an empowered Zen Life Instructor.
June is also a Kumu Hula (Master Teacher of Hula). She founded a hula school called Halau I Ka Pono, the Hula School of Chicago in September 2009.
June has a Bachelor of Science in Biology from University of Redlands and a Master's in Public Health from the University of Hawaii at Manoa. She spent nearly 25 years in foodbanking in Portland, Oregon; Hawaii Island; and with Feeding America in Chicago.
Zen Life Instructor, Christine DuSell
Christine DuSell has been a member of ZLMC since 2010 and started her regular meditation practice shortly thereafter. She has serve on the Center's Board of Directors and has participated in the sangha community as a daily opener, study circle steward, ethics circle steward, and Sunday Morning Zen speaker. She is an empowered Zen Life Instructor. She has a Bachelor's in Social Welfare from Aurora University and a Master's in Social Work from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
Zen Life Instructor, Dan Giloth
Dan Giloth has practiced meditation since 1999. He has trained in both the Tibetan Shambhala and Zen traditions. He is a veteran labor and community organizer who works on Chicago's west side. He is passionate about applying Buddhist tools to organizing and also making Buddhism more socially accessible and relevant. Dan is also a fiction writer and recently completed two novels. He lives in Oak Park with his wife and daughter. Dan is an empowered Zen Life Instructor. He has a Master's in Anthropology from University of Wisconsin-Madison with a focus on Industrial and Labor Relations.
Zen Life Instructor, Susan Sensemann
Susan Sensemann is a Zen Life Instructor and a ZLMC advanced member, an artist, professor emerita, and mother of two adult children. She attended Syracuse University and did graduate work at Tyler School of Art, Temple University. She was hired in 1973 to teach painting and drawing at the University of Illinois, Champaign. In 1981 she went to UIC at Chicago and taught there for 29 years. She has exhibited work in numerous galleries in this country and abroad.
Zen Life Instructor, Robert Demaree
Robert Demaree has been coaching, teaching and facilitating individuals and teams since 1994. He is the founder of Next Step Leadership, an executive coaching firm dedicated to developing leaders. He holds a Master Somatic Coaching certification from the Strozzi Institute. He has an M.S. in Organization Development and an M. Ed in Counseling and Educational Psychology from Loyola University Chicago.. He is a Practicing Member at ZLMC. He started his practice of meditation and study of Buddhism in 1980 at the New York Dharmadatu meditation center.
Zen Life Instructor - In Training, Michael Brunner
Michael Brunner has practiced meditation since 2008 and first came to ZLMC in 2009. He is a past board member and is active in developing and executing the Center’s Marketing strategy and outreach. Michael has been engaged in several Sales and Marketing executive roles over the past twenty years and has a passion for engaging mindfulness in the management process. He currently is a VP of Sales Enablement at a marketing firm in Chicago’s South suburbs.
